Education: Monica has been in the dental industry for over twenty years, after attending school in the United States and obtaining her associate’s degree in International (General) Studies at BYU-Idaho (Ricks College) and studying abroad in Europe through Bellevue University. She returned home to BC and enrolled in BCIT’s Dental Administration Program at their downtown Vancouver campus in 2000. Monica enjoyed the program so much that when the instructor asked her to be a teacher assistant for the following semester, she gladly volunteered her time in their computer lab. This was Monica’s first opportunity to help her peers as they developed their skills in the dental administration field.
Goal: Her professional goal is to provide dental office administrators and managers with a community where they are represented and supported. To generate opportunities for continuing education and provide access to practical resources whereby they can experience growth and success within their profession and practice. If we can train, support, and develop the administrative branch of dental offices, we can help alleviate some of the frustration and stress dentists face on the business side of their practices. Thus, they can focus on the dentistry they love providing for their patients. This mindset inspired Monica to develop an office manager study club in January 2021, so she wants to create a community dedicated to supporting the administrative team.
Experience: Monica’s dental experience includes working in general and specialty practices. She understands the importance of building lasting relationships within the community. She has enjoyed working with a diverse group of professionals. Monica has observed that the breakdown of effective communication is the cause of many challenges that practices struggle with today. A positive approach to remedy such frustrations inspires the team to collaborate and build trust and unity. While establishing functional workflow systems and focusing extra attention on continuous improvement, we can ensure that systems are efficient and effective. Monica’s goal is to create teams that support one another and takes pride in excellence.
Volunteer: Monica volunteered several times as a speaker host for the Pacific Dental Conference in Vancouver. Passionate about learning, she strives to share her knowledge and skills with her peers and learn from them. One of the reasons she runs a study club is her belief that one should constantly learn and grow.
Memberships: Monica is a member in good standing of the Dental Office Managers Association of Canada and the American Academy of Dental Office Management. As an active member of these associations, she exemplifies dedication to the profession and is committed to pursuing excellence in dental practice management. Monica is also a Toastmasters International (District 21) member and serves as the VP of Membership for her local club. With Toastmasters, Monica can build her communication and leadership skills. Monica is also associated with WeBC (formerly Women’s Enterprise Centre). It is a not-for-profit supporting, propelling, and celebrating women entrepreneurs in BC for nearly three decades. In addition, Monica participates in a Mentoring Program to offer and gain support from other female entrepreneurs in BC. Finally, Monica is also a lifetime member of the Worldwide Women’s Association; their mission is to advance women’s professional development worldwide.
Outside work: Monica spends her time at the fitness studio, attending concerts, shopping for shoes, sipping good wine with friends, or diving deep into a non-fiction book or podcast. Monica grew up in Vancouver, received her education in the US, and now lives in the suburbs of Vancouver, as the west coast will always be home.
Every Practice needs a Monica!
